Cultural Competency & Working with Interpreters

The aim of this course is to introduce learners to cultural competence when working with CALD migrant and refugee patients from Asian, Middle Eastern and African backgrounds and with Interpreters.

This course is intended for health professionals working in secondary care, primary care or NGO sector.

Prerequisites

  • This course has no prerequisites.

A pre-requisite to other CALD courses. This course is a combination of the two courses: CALD 1 Culture and Cultural Competency and CALD 4 Working with Interpreters.

Learning outcomes

Participants completing this course will:

  • Gain skills on how to apply the four elements of cultural competency (awareness, knowledge, sensitivity and skills) in practice to develop cultural competency.
  • Gain skills on how to work with effectively with Interpreters; including pre-briefing, structuring a session and de-briefing.

Duration

E-Learning online self-paced learning = 4 hours.

OR

Face-to-face in-person (facilitated by an educator) = 4 hours.

OR

Remote face-to-face training via video conferencing = 2 hours. This is an abridged version facilitated by an educator via Zoom.
